There were Light and Flukey winds for the First Ever Green Cruise to Steve's Landing. For the Sailboats it was a Challenge.. For the Power Boats the Flat water presented a Temptation to Bring the Boat up on Plane.
The Objective of the Green Cruise is to arrive in time for Cocktails using a Minimum amount of Fuel.
For Sailboats Green is defined as Using Sail only for Propulsion. The Higher percentage of the Cruise time under Sail only, the Greener the Cruise. Sail only time was defined to be Total Time Minus Engine Time.
For Power boats Green score was defined to be time from Kemah Bridge to Steves Landing divided by 4 hours (that is the time a boat averaging 7 knots would take to travel the 28 NM distance) Note: The Slower you get there the better your Green Score.
At Cocktail Hour Three Sail Boats and Three Power Boats turned in their times, and the Judge did his calculations.
There were awards In both Power and Sail Competition. There were Explainations about the wind from the sailboaters for why they did not achieve the 75% score set as the objective. There were Admitted delays by power boaters seeking adjustments to their Elapsed times.
The Most Interesting Adjustment was admitted by Puffin. They were delayed for two hours at Galveston Yacht Basin waiting for a Large power boat to purchase $14,000 of Diesel. The Adjustment for two Hour of Elapsed time was made But they were not peanalized with the Extra 6 Nautical miles they traveled.
The Most Pathetic explaination was put forward by Stellar Of Course. They took down Sails in the ICW section after the wind went South to North to South. They just wanted to get there.
The Scores were:
Sail boats: Stellar of Course 50%, Remedy 62%, Beauty and the Geek 68%
Power boats: Puffin 1.00, Island Breeze 1.03, Rowdy 1.09
First Place Awards were: A testimonial Card recording the Score and a Crisp Green $5 bill to Purchase a Gallon of Diesel at the Next fill up. These went to M/Y Rowdy and S/V Beauty and the Geek
Runner ups: Stellar of Course and Island Breeze each received a Three Pack of Bungee cords and encouraging words from the Commodore.
The Restaraunt was packed , the service was slow, orders were lost, many complained. We had requested three separate tables but the hostess decided to seat us all at one. We should have insisted on three or even four sepatate tables. One Waitress can not give good service to 20 people at once.
As usual the Food was Good and the Price is Reasonable.
Next Morning for Breakfast TMCA took over the Outdoor dining space and had an All you can eat Buffet. It was prepared, served, eaten by our Cruisers. Including Waffles, Link Sausage(2 kinds), Scrambled eggs with Potato, Pepper and Onion, giant selections of Fresh Fruit, several pastries and Orange Juice.
Departure for Home was around 10:30. The wind was mostly westerly which made the sail to Bolivar. Going up the Bay there was a spirited race between Beauty, Stellar and Remedy. Even A Goode Ketch Hoisted a Couple of Sails. The race effectively ended at HSC 50 where all joined the Ship Channel. We did get about 15 Miles of Green Cruising as we Tacked Up the Bay. We motored the rest of the way home in intermittent showers and very lightwinds on the nose.
